A Christmas Evening with YRYO: A Holiday Fundraiser in Richmond Hill, Dec 14
Most people meet a youth orchestra in a concert hall: lights down, programs in hand, applause at the end. But some of the most important music young players make happens far from a stage, in a seniors' residence lounge, a hospital hallway or a community festival. On Monday, December 14, 2026, York Region Youth Orchestra invites Richmond Hill and York Region families to A Christmas Evening with YRYO, a festive fundraising evening at Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church that will help keep that kind of music going in 2027.

Here is what the evening is, what you can expect, and why we think this particular holiday event matters more than it might first appear.
A Christmas Evening with YRYO: The Essentials
Date: Monday, December 14, 2026
Time: 5:30 to 8:30 PM
Place: Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church, 10066 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, ON
Suggested donation: $50
In support of: YRYO's 2027 Community Outreach Programs
Families, friends and the church community are all welcome. The tagline on our flyer says it simply: Music, Community, A Brighter Tomorrow.
What Happens During the Evening
This is not a formal concert where you sit still for two hours. Think of it as a warm, relaxed holiday gathering with music at its centre.
Live music. Seasonal music performed in a festive atmosphere, right in the church where the orchestra rehearses every Monday night.
A light dinner reception. A variety of food donated by local businesses, served as a standing reception so people can move around, visit and talk.
Student pop-up booths. YRYO students are making handmade cards, keychains, ornaments and more. All proceeds from the booths support YRYO, so a small stocking stuffer doubles as a donation. Look for the hot chocolate table, too.
Community. Neighbours, music families, church members and supporters in one room at the busiest, brightest time of the year.
Why a Youth Orchestra Plays Beyond the Concert Hall
Every dollar raised that evening goes toward the music YRYO brings to the wider community: performances at senior residences, hospitals, art galleries, cultural festivals, charity galas and other outreach events. Our students have already taken part in Canada Day performances, senior home volunteer performances and local community events, and last spring a YRYO string quartet performed with the Richmond Hill Presbyterian Chancel Choir in a community concert of Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi.
Outreach is not an extra at the edge of what we do. It changes the young musicians themselves. A concert hall audience chose to come and hear you. A room of seniors on a Tuesday afternoon, or a family waiting in a hospital, did not. Playing for them teaches a different kind of attention: watching faces, choosing music that will reach people, and understanding that a piece you have rehearsed for weeks can be the best part of someone's day.
It is also a lesson in responsibility that private practice cannot give. When a small group of students goes out to perform, there is no large section to blend into. Each player has to be prepared, punctual and steady, because the people listening are counting on them.
Service Hours That Mean Something
Many York Region families know that Ontario secondary school students need 40 hours of community involvement to graduate. According to YRYO's member policy, students may receive volunteer hours for approved community service performances, such as performances at seniors' residences, hospitals, community centres, charity events and other community outreach programs. Regular rehearsals are part of musical training and are not counted.
We like this model because the hours are not busywork. Students earn them by doing the thing they are learning to do well, for people who genuinely appreciate it. Supporting the 2027 Community Outreach Programs helps make more of those opportunities possible.
A Busy, Musical December in Richmond Hill
A Christmas Evening with YRYO comes right after one of the biggest weekends in our season. On December 12 at 6 PM and December 13 at 2 PM, YRYO musicians will play The Nutcracker live with Victoria Ballet Company at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available through rhcentre.ca, and the promo code YRYO gives 5% off.
If The Nutcracker is the grand stage of our December, the Christmas Evening is the living room: smaller, warmer and closer to the community the orchestra serves.
How You Can Be Part of It
Come on December 14. Bring family, friends or colleagues, and plan for a $50 suggested donation per guest.
