On the evening of Friday, June 13, the Markham Peoples Community Church was filled with music, emotion, and community pride as the York Region Youth Orchestra (YRYO) presented its 4th Annual Concert "Symphonic Fantasy" to a full and enthusiastic audience.
This was no ordinary youth orchestra performance. From the very first note, the audience was captivated by the energy and artistry radiating from the stage. The level of musicianship on display was nothing short of remarkable polished, confident, and deeply expressive. In the words of many in attendance, it was a performance that could hold its own on any professional stage.
Four Soloists, Four Moments to Remember

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the four student soloists who stepped into the spotlight and delivered performances of extraordinary quality. Each year, YRYO selects its soloists through a competitive audition process this is a once-a-year opportunity, earned through dedication and hard work.
On this night, all four soloists rose to the occasion. Each brought their own voice and musicality to the stage, performing alongside the full orchestra in a way that moved the audience and earned a well-deserved standing ovation.
To every YRYO member reading this: the soloists who shone on Friday were once exactly where you are now. Keep pushing, keep growing your moment will come.

Swept Into the Story / The Magic of "Symphonic Fantasy"
True to its name, "Symphonic Fantasy" brought the grandeur and emotion of cinematic music to life through live orchestral performance. As familiar melodies filled the hall, the audience was transported not just to a concert, but into the heart of the stories those pieces tell. Long after the final note faded, the feeling lingered.
A Special Honour from the Mayor of Markham

The evening held a particularly meaningful moment as Frank Scarpitti, Mayor of Markham, joined the concert as a Special Guest Speaker. Mayor Scarpitti delivered warm congratulations and recognized YRYO's ongoing commitment to the community as a registered charity. In a proud milestone for the organization, YRYO was presented with an official certificate in recognition of its dedicated service to the York Region community. It was a powerful affirmation of the impact this organization continues to make beyond the concert hall.
Class of 2026 / Celebrating Our Graduates

This concert also marked a bittersweet farewell and a new beginning for YRYO's graduating students. During the Class of 2026 Recognition Ceremony, Joshua Pow, Kevin Wang, Kyle Chun, and Jayden Chen were honoured in the presence of Mayor Scarpitti, who personally presented their certificates of recognition.
Watching these young musicians reflect on their journey through YRYO the late rehearsals, the breakthroughs, the friendships was deeply moving. Yet this is not an ending. YRYO welcomes its alumni to continue participating as adult members, and we look forward to seeing our graduates inspire the next generation with the same sense of belonging and pride that defined their own time in the orchestra.
Before the Curtain Rises / Community in Action

The energy of the evening began long before the first note. Student musicians arrived at 3:00 PM for rehearsal, preparing with focus and commitment. Thanks to the incredible support of our parent volunteers, the time between rehearsal and performance was filled with warmth students gathered in the dining area to enjoy delicious food and refreshments, sharing laughter and encouragement before taking the stage. It was a beautiful reminder that YRYO is more than an orchestra; it is a community.
